A meeting was held today in Milan by the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC) with the aim of promoting dialogue between National Federations and the UCI. The meeting, organized by the UEC, convened in full compliance with its statutes, and coordinated by FCI Secretary General Marcello Tolu, saw the participation of UEC President, UCI Vice President and CCP UCI member Enrico Della Casa, Italian Cycling Federation President and CCP UCI member Cordiano Dagnoni, UCI representatives Matthew Knight, Sports Strategy Manager and Maxime Métry (road sector), for the FCI Giorgio Elli (Road Sector Secretary) and Luca Papini, General Secretary of the Professional Cycling League.
The choice of Milan as the meeting venue confirms Italy's central role, one of the founding nations of the UCI and among the most active countries worldwide in organizing and developing road cycling. The Italian Cycling Federation, historically a pillar of the UCI, continues to be a point of reference in supporting international activities and coordinating calendars.
The work focused on road calendars for 2027 and 2028, two seasons characterized by major global events: in 2027 the World Cycling Championships will be held, which will bring together all disciplines from late August to early September; in 2028 the Olympic Games will return from mid-July, requiring careful planning of international activity. A combination that will make capillary coordination work necessary to ensure balance and sustainability throughout the entire season.
Enrico Della Casa, President of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme: "We wanted to organize this meeting in Italy, one of the founding nations of the UCI and always a protagonist in road cycling. The FCI represents a pillar of the UCI and a fundamental interlocutor. We are working together to address and overcome the critical issues of an increasingly crowded calendar: there is much to do, but this is an important first step to lay solid and shared foundations, carefully listening to the needs of organizers."
Cordiano Dagnoni, President of the Italian Cycling Federation: "It is evident that international cycling calendars have become increasingly intense. This does not favor participation, especially penalizing countries with fewer resources and thus contrasting the intention of international bodies to increase the spread and practice of cycling. I thank the UEC and President Enrico Della Casa for organizing a meeting to discuss these issues here in Italy, recognizing the significant role of the FCI within the UCI, international cycling, and in relations with emerging countries' federations."
