Time for a review at the end of the 2025 season. Considering Grand Tours, World Championships (road race and time trial) and Monument Classics, ten top races were contested this calendar year.
Once again, Tadej Pogacar was in charge: the Slovenian won the Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Tour de France, Road World Championships, and Il Lombardy.
Five victories out of ten races, just like last year, with the only difference being that in 2024 he celebrated victory at the Giro d'Italia instead of the Tour of Flanders. Such a dominance, in history, had only occurred in the 1971-1972 biennium. In that case, the protagonist was Eddy Merckx with 5 victories for two consecutive seasons (out of 9 races, since the World Championships time trial was not yet held). In 1971, the Belgian won Milan-San Remo, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Tour de France, World Championships, and Il Lombardy. The following year, instead of the world title, he won the Giro d'Italia.
For Pogacar, these become 17 career victories in top races: 5 Grand Tours, 10 Monument Classics, and 2 Road World Championships. In this case, Merckx's record is still far away, with 33 total victories: 11 Grand Tours, 19 Monument Classics, and 3 Road World Championships.
For Italian cycling, the fourth consecutive year without victories in Grand Tours, World Championships, and Monument Classics has gone into the archives. The last two triumphs remain those obtained in 2021: Filippo Ganna's double world title in the time trial and Sonny Colbrelli's Paris-Roubaix.
