We are the history, let no one feel offended, but this history hurts us. Italian cycling has written and is writing some history, despite everything, even if some pretend not to notice. Bizarre calendars, bordering on the inhuman, made of quantity at the expense of quality, but that hardly matters.
What matters is raising funds and finances, generating turnover and moving cash, rather than thinking about the movement. Killer calendars that kill races, in complete silence. Focusing only on what's coming in a few days, without dwelling on what has happened, on what has already occurred in these months. From October 1st to 5th, the European Championships, with tough and selective routes, suitable for riders like Pogacar and Vingegaard, just to give an idea, in fact the Slovenian and the Dane will be there and not where some organizers would have wanted them to be.
A European championship during the Giro dell'Emilia (October 4th), Coppa Agostoni (October 5th), and Tre Valli Varesine (October 7th). Valuable races that in recent years have been properly relaunched, with absolute top-level participation: nothing, may the best win, let the organizers and others manage as they can. There's no respect, only competition, overlap, and selection: burial. Amen.
The blame? On everyone, from the UCI that doesn't take history into account, to our Federciclismo, which struggles to make its voice heard, but also the new League which is no better, because until proven otherwise, the organizers are its associates and certain things should be raised in time and well in advance, while it's still possible.
Nothing, we've arrived at massive calendars, races that overlap (even six or seven in a single day), but we're not on horseback and, we're certain, the bureaucracy playing on its own game board will know how to find the right loopholes to justify everything.
We are the history, sang the prince, let no one feel excluded. No one.
