It is a long, medium mountain stage, which presents difficulties in the initial part with three mountain passes: first the Exilles (3rd category) and then in quick succession the Monginevro and Lautaret, both second category. It is easy to think that on these climbs there could be a battle to break away and especially to conquer points valid for the polka dot jersey, while in the second part of the stage the teams of the fastest riders might work to try to close the gap and attempt a sprint finish.
A variable to certainly consider are the possible choices of Lidl Trek: Mads Pedersen is definitely one of the most resistant among the fast riders and could ask his teammates for an effort to prevent the return of riders, first and foremost Philipsen, who could then put him in difficulty in the sprint.
