Filippo Baroncini is in the hospital in Walbrzych, Poland. This is the city where the third stage of the Tour of Poland concluded on Wednesday. The UAE Emirates rider is one of the 6 involved in the crash 20 km from the stage's finish with start and end in Walbrzych. The incident forced the organization to stop and neutralize the stage as all ambulances were busy assisting the crashed riders.
Baroncini, from Massa Lombarda in Romagna, hit a small wall and was immediately hospitalized in Walbrzych. Here's the initial quick diagnosis: broken left collarbone, multiple facial fractures. And additionally, a broken cervical vertebra, fortunately without neurological issues. "In the crash - the Walbrzych doctors immediately specified - he did not suffer damage to vital organs. Filippo's life is not in danger". In the afternoon, UAE Emirates general manager Mauro Gianetti flew to Poland. It's worth noting that Walbrzych doctors immediately performed surgery to fix his collarbone, which was the least serious of the fractures. Even last night, Gianetti and UAE Emirates doctors reiterated that Filippo's vital organs were not damaged. "Our rider - Gianetti, from the Swiss Canton Ticino, declared - is however in an induced coma. The doctors have placed him in deep sedation, his conditions are stable".
The multiple facial fractures, including the left cheekbone, require immobilization. This is the main reason for the sedation. He will undergo facial surgery. The UAE Emirates staff is organizing Filippo's transport: "We have decided to have him operated on in Italy - Gianetti continues. Filippo will arrive in Italy by Tuesday evening. Regarding the city where he will be operated on, Milan is the most probable hypothesis".
For now, it is useless and inappropriate to discuss recovery times. Filippo was born on August 26, 2000. He became U23 World Champion in Belgium in 2021. He triumphed at the Super 8 Classic Impanis 2024, also in Belgium. This year he won the Tour of Belgium stage race. An excellent fast passer, he has been a professional since 2022, and since last year has been part of UAE Emirates with captain Tadej Pogacar. As a professional, Filippo has not had Lady Luck on his side: he has broken his wrist three times and his elbow once. Baroncini joined UAE Emirates in January 2024.
