He passed away on a full summer afternoon, at 74 years old, defeated by a brief but relentless illness. Lido Francini was very well-known in the cycling world. Coming from a family passionate about this sport - his father Alighiero never missed a race, and an uncle even rode the Tour de France - he was a good cyclist in his youth.
Lido started with Pedale Toscano Ponticino, winning many races in the junior and youth categories and a few among amateurs. He was Daniele Bennati's first true coach during his youth at Polisportiva Albergo Oliveto and immediately recognized his talents. He helped him grow in the best possible way, and during those years, 1995 and 1996, Bennati won several races.
He continued to train many young riders at Polisportiva Albergo until three years ago. He had worked as a bus driver at Atam, owned a bicycle shop, and then after retirement dedicated himself to training and helping many young riders grow not just as athletes, but as men. He was truly competent and a genuinely good person.
Lido Francini will be buried tomorrow Wednesday in the Arezzo cemetery. To his wife Morena, his son Riccardo, and his family, the most heartfelt condolences from the entire cycling community.
