Lorena Wiebes claims her second personal victory in this edition of the Giro d'Italia Women at the finish line in Monselice after 120 kilometers starting from Mirano. The Dutch sprinter from SD Worx Protime left her compatriot Marianne Vos (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and German Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) behind; world champion Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx - Protime) finished fourth, followed by pink jersey wearer Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team) and Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ), who put her Colnago ahead of Anna van der Breggen's Specialized (Team SD Worx - Protime).
Decisive for the stage result was the strong push by UAE Team ADQ of Elisa Longo Borghini with about forty kilometers to go: taking advantage of a section with some wind, the Emirates team pressed hard on the pedals, breaking the group. Following Longo Borghini's wheel, Amialiusik, Chapman, Gasparrini, and Persico were also joined by pink jersey Reusser, Lippert (Movistar), Kopecky, Checcini, Guarischi, Harvey, van der Breggen, Wiebes (SD Worx Protime), Vos, and Reijnhout, who caught the early breakaway riders and continued to increase their margin over the rest of the group.
THE STAGE - At the second of the 120 kilometers, attacks began and Katia Ragusa (Human Powered Health), Asia Zontone (Isolmant - Premac - Vittoria), Alice Bulegato (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo), Sara Luccon (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) were joined shortly after by German Franziska Brauße (CERATIZIT Pro Cycling Team). A group of riders including Marta Jaskulska (CERATIZIT Pro Cycling Team), Loes Adegeest (FDJ - SUEZ), Christina Schweinberger (Fenix-Deceuninck), Emma Redaelli (Isolmant - Premac - Vittoria), Vittoria Ruffilli (Roland), Michela De Grandis (Team Mendelspeck E-Work), and Giulia Vallotto (Team Mendelspeck E-Work) pursued the breakaway but were caught by the pink jersey group after a few kilometers.
The five breakaway riders continued to lead, pedaling in agreement, passing first at the Mira Intermediate Sprint (won by Brauße ahead of Ragusa and Zontone) and reaching a maximum advantage of 3'20" over the group.
After about fifty kilometers, a mass crash first split the group while UAE Team ADQ, Visma Lease a Bike, and SD Worx were working to reduce the gap with the early breakaway. Subsequently, UAE launched the decisive attack, catching the early breakaway riders. A group of 21 riders formed and led the race approaching the Monselice circuit and during the local circuit laps.
With heavy legs from the many kilometers in the break, Asia Zontone, Alice Bulegato, and Sara Luccon dropped from the head of the race a few kilometers from the finish, as did Alena Amialiusik and Mikayla Harvey, who stopped and waited for the group. Sixteen riders remained at the front, with SD Worx Protime working to launch Wiebes' sprint, who finished the stage with arms raised, bringing her victories in the "pink race" to five.
In the general classification, Reusser maintains the lead with 0'16" over Longo Borghini, who remains second. Anna van der Breggen moves up to third place, set to restart from Bellaria with a 1'53" deficit to the Swiss race leader.
