Is there still something to discover about Fausto Coppi? The answer - obviously a yes - is contained in a book about to be released: Fausto, My Coppi. A Love Story Uphill in the Diary of Wife Bruna, available from July 4th in all bookstores, on Amazon and in the online store of publisher Lab DFG - sport between the lines.
Cycling is a great love story, like the one between Bruna Ciampolini and Fausto Coppi, told in these pages from the intimate diary of the Campionissimo's wife. A passionate love marked by glory and tragedy. With an abandonment that today would hardly raise an eyebrow, but was then a scandal. Franco Rota, journalist and Coppi's confidant, the spokesperson, collected Signora Bruna's outpouring. Today Luciana Rota brings it back to life in a novel that intertwines myth and sentiment, memory and passion. A human and family narrative, where the bicycle is a witness to an eternal love.
"I was his shadow; I tried to be discreet. I wanted to share his love, not his glory. [...] The good and evil we had done to each other no longer mattered. Only memories remained and remain. And often those are enough for the heart of a lonely woman".
In addition to the preface by Maurizio Crosetti and the illustrated preface by Riccardo Guasco, the book features testimonials from Antonella Bellutti, Beppe Bergomi, Fabio Genovesi, Giovanni Hänninen, Linus, Francesco Moser, Vincenzo Nibali, Claudio Pesci, Paola Pezzo, Rossella Spinosa, Pamela Villoresi and a historical note by Paolo Mieli.
"Marina was not yet three years old. She took the phone and seriously said: 'Win, daddy. Win for me'. Two days later the newspapers were not talking about the champion's retirement and in the evening all the newsboys in Italy were shouting Fausto's name: 'Fausto Coppi wins the time trial'".
