Next weekend he will be engaged in the Netherlands, on the mythical Assen track, riding the Honda of which he is the official test rider: he will replace the injured Luca Marini in the MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix.
Immediately after, Aleix Espargaro will park his motorized two-wheeler in the paddock and climb onto the human-powered Trek to fine-tune his preparation for his debut at the Tour of Austria, wearing the Lidl Trek Future Racing jersey, the development team of the American formation.
Lidl Trek has in fact registered its youth team for the Austrian race - category 2.1, scheduled from July 9th to 13th - and has decided to field the 35-year-old Spanish rider who has never hidden his love for cycling: "After a back injury forced me to stop racing, I turned to cycling for recovery and training. Over time, it became more than just preparation: it became my passion. Living in Andorra, I made friends with many professional cyclists who inspired me to train at a higher level," he says.
The collaboration with the American team has led him to put his great sporting experience at the service of the younger riders, and now, after participating in some gravel events, here is his big opportunity.
"It will be a great challenge, but I have no particular expectations. I will try to learn as much as possible, help my teammates, and above all, enjoy the effort. I have grown a lot as a cyclist in these months I spent with Lidl Trek (during winter training camps, he cycled with professionals, ed.) and I have learned many things. I feel good and can't wait to race and measure myself in this new world for me".
