It was a heart-pounding finale for the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse, a true battle between the peloton and the breakaway that started from the first kilometers. However, nothing worked out for the day's escapees, as we witnessed the second sprint of this edition with Belgian Jordi Meeus (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe) preceding Davide Ballerini (XDS Astana Team) and Lewis Askey (Groupama Fdj).
After two stages that were quite challenging from an altimetric perspective, the Tour de Suisse tried to catch its breath on the sixth day of racing. The 186.7 kilometers from Chur to Neuhausen A. Rheinfall were not a walk in the park, but on paper, they were perfect for a breakaway. The two second-category mountain passes were all concentrated in the first part of the stage, while the last 60 km were a continuous up and down. The day's breakaway formed after just 5 km with Harry Sweeney (Ef Education Easy Post), Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco Alula), Stefan Kung, and former yellow jersey Roman Gregoire (Groupama Fdj) who managed to gain up to 1'30" while other athletes launched unsuccessful pursuits behind them.
With 45 km to go, Romain Gregoire, winner of the Tour de Suisse opening stage, stepped back, leaving his former breakaway companions to fight for the stage victory. The 3 escapees, taking regular turns, believed until the end, trying to hold off the peloton that caught them just before entering the last kilometer. In the final phases, the work of Tudor and XDS Astana teams was fundamental.
Jordi Meeus, launched by teammate Danny Van Poppel, was the first to start the sprint and crossed the finish line with his arms raised in front of Davide Ballerini. Good performance by two other Italians who reached the top ten: Nicolò Buratti (Bahrain Victorious) fifth and Stefano Oldani (Cofidis) tenth.
No changes in the general classification with Kevin Vauquelin maintaining the leadership. Tomorrow will be the last line stage of the 2025 Swiss race, with the group departing from Neuhausen to arrive in Emmetten after 207.3 km, and the uphill finish could change the general classification once again.
