As expected, the time trial in Saint-Péray was won by Remco Evenepoel, who, wearing the world champion's jersey and gold helmet to commemorate his Olympic title, was the fastest over the 17.4-kilometer distance.
Jonas Vingegaard finished second, 20" behind the Belgian champion, but with a 28" advantage over Tadej Pogacar, for which he considers himself very satisfied with the result. "I'm very happy with how the trial went, I can't complain" – said the Dane – "But let's wait for the mountain stages this weekend, which will be decisive for the race outcome".
The time trial shook up the general classification and, once again, there was a change in the yellow jersey. "I can be quite satisfied with how this stage went. Remco is the best time trialist in the world, so losing only 20 seconds is more than satisfactory".
The Dane is certainly happy about the gap from the Belgian, but he is even more satisfied with having recorded a better time compared to Pogacar. "It's definitely very important to gain time on Tadej, so I'm fully satisfied with my performance. I had no problems in this time trial, I was just missing some gears. But I don't think anything has changed. Perhaps I would have needed more speed on the straighter sections, but I don't think it would have gained me much time, maybe not even 5 seconds".
In the general classification, Vingegaard is in fifth place, 16" behind Evenepoel, while Pogacar is eighth with 38" behind the Belgian. "It's always better to be ahead of Tadej, but I'm also behind Remco, and we know that the mountain stages this weekend will be decisive. The strongest in the mountains will win the race".
