It was the Giro of 1961, the Rai garage chief in Milan and responsible for the pink race's vehicles, turned to the great Nando Martellini, historic Rai correspondent, "Nando, can you please give me the Garibaldi". That was the Giro celebrating the Centenary of Italian Unification and a full-page image of Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of the Fathers of the Homeland. That book, which contains all the detailed information about the pink race, including the route, passing times and information about the stage cities, has since been called the "Garibaldi", the book that unites Italy and "les suiveurs" who follow the pink race.
It is the book of memory and cycling, we know well, does not forget. It has the gift of remembering, but this year the Garibaldi almost feels ashamed and afraid to indicate the Cima Coppi on the altimetry. The highest peak of the Giro, the highest Mountain Grand Prix of the Giro d'Italia, established in 1965 in homage to the Campionissimo who died five years earlier, is marked with a "C" on the margin, at the bottom, no longer clearly legible and identifiable with the GPM CIMA COPPI inscription. This year, the Colle delle Finestre, with its 2,178 meters, is the highest peak, and is marked with a simple "C", better not to exaggerate, just in case.
One thing is certain, our French cousins have put the initials HD, of Henri Desgrange, journalist and creator of the Tour, on the yellow jersey and the "Souvenir Henri Desgrange" inscription stands out clearly on the maps. We have chosen a simple "C", like the copyright of a race that thinks of saving, even on memory.
