
He died doing what he had done his entire life: cycling. The former Belgian champion Ludo Dierckxsens was victim of a health crisis while participating in the 1,000 km ride for Kom Op Tegen Kanker, a charity event to raise funds for cancer research.
According to initial reports, Dierckxsens suffered a health crisis: "Rescuers immediately began resuscitation efforts, but unfortunately Ludo could not be saved," the organizers explained.
Born in Geel on October 14, 1964, Dierckxsens turned professional in 1994 at the incredible age of 29, signed by the Belgian team Saxon. After winning the Grand Prix de Denain in 1997, he was hired by Lotto in the following season, standing out especially in the classics thanks to his attacking style.
In 1999, he moved to Lampre-Daikin and with the Italian team's jersey, he won the Belgian national title and a stage in the Tour de France. After ending his career at the conclusion of the 2005 season, Ludo focused on managing a bicycle shop in his hometown.
