Winning in a sprint is never easy, especially when the best riders are competing, but today Olav Kooij and his Visma-Lease a Bike were perfect, conquering the finish line in Viadana.
"In group sprints, there can always be mistakes, we made some in the first two sprints" - Kooij explained. "However, we showed we have the qualities to win and today we took advantage of the team's great work".
The first victory came with Wout van Aert, who achieved an extraordinary win in Siena, and today the Dutch team secured their second success in the pink race. "The morale was already good, Wout van Aert's victory helped us and unlocked us. We executed the plan perfectly and managed to achieve victory".
Wout van Aert was an important man for the team, perfectly launching Kooij towards success. "I'm happy to have won, we always race to improve, we want to achieve better and better results, and here we have a very competitive team, not just for stages with me and Van Aert but also for Simon Yates, who is our man for the general classification. These are the goals we have from now until the end of the Giro. Van Aert and I have a great connection both off and on the race. As the last man, he can do better than almost any other rider in the world because he can stay at the front and pull longer than others".
In this Giro, there aren't many opportunities for sprinters, and Kooij and his team will continue to seek success whenever the opportunity arises.
"Unfortunately, there aren't many opportunities for sprinters in the Giro, so sometimes you have to know how to wait, recover, and not spend too much energy in the harder stages. At the moment, I'm not thinking about racing the Tour de France, this year the goal for me and the team was the Giro d'Italia, and we'll think about the Tour de France in the future. Certainly, there are other milestones to take in this Giro d'Italia".
