The Giro d'Italia started its second week of racing yesterday, and after the Pisa time trial, Isaac Del Toro maintained the pink jersey. The general classification partially changed, with Primoz Roglic managing to recover 1'07", but UAE Emirates' supremacy is evident, with 4 riders positioned among the top seven in the general classification.
"Certainly, yesterday was a good day," Del Toro said. "I didn't fall and didn't take any risks in any corner. So I'd say it went quite well."
During Monday's press conference, the Mexican had said that after the time trial, he would take stock, trying to understand how far he could push forward, considering that he hadn't come to the Giro with captain status.
"I think the race is putting everyone in their place and I think that as a team, looking at the general classification, we are all up front, and it's fantastic for us."
Del Toro is in the pink jersey, Juan Ayuso is second, and then there are McNulty and Adam Yates, who are sixth and seventh respectively. "Naturally, regarding internal hierarchies, the decision is up to managers and sports directors. I am outside of all this and just do what I'm told to do. If they tell me to focus entirely on the pink jersey or help my teammates, I'll do it, just as if they asked my teammates to help me maintain the pink jersey, I'm sure they would."
For now, in UAE Emirates XRG, Del Toro is a kind of joker, but if he were asked in the team to fight for victory, he would do so without hesitation.
"I don't know what I would do if I were asked to win the Giro. I think first, I would need to have my best legs. Certainly, if I were to have other days like the one in Siena, then I might think I could do it. But I don't know, because I'll have to help my teammates and it will be nice to work to make the team win. I was asked if it's difficult to wake up with the pink jersey on: for me, the most difficult thing is falling asleep with the pink jersey on, more than waking up."
