Isabella Holmgren will turn twenty in two days, but she has already unwrapped a gift today. The Lidl Trek Canadian wins the Durango / Durango stage, beating French rider Évita Muzic (FDJ Suez) by 8" and Thalita de Jong (Human Powered Health), who finished 44" behind the winner after sprinting in the chase group. The 31-year-old Dutch rider, perhaps not realizing the breakaway, celebrated as if she had won and then understood her mistake. Among the best of the day were Barbara Malcotti (Human Powered Health) and Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ), finishing seventh and tenth respectively.
The protagonist of the early part of the race was Swiss rider Elena Hartmann (Caratizit), who remained alone in the lead for a long time and was caught by the peloton about thirty kilometers from the finish, coinciding with the first slopes of the Areito climb, the day's first difficulty. It was on this climb that the race heated up: attacks by Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) and Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) thinned out the group. Subsequently, the pace was controlled by UAE and Movistar.
Twenty kilometers from the finish line, Greta Marturano set an important pace for the Italian champion, and the group further selected itself with a determined Elisa Balsamo (Lidl Trek) skillfully staying with the best and cresting first at the Alto Gouiria mountain prime before handing over to her teammates Gaia Realini and Isabella Holmgren.
Holmgren, in her second season with the American team, then pushed ahead, forcing her rivals to chase. She crested the last mountain prime of the day ahead of Évita Muzic (FDJ – SUEZ) and managed to maintain a slim advantage that allowed her to break into tears of joy, celebrating her first career victory.
