After two podium finishes in the first two sprints, the 46th Tour de Hongrie finally saw Dylan Groenewegen's moment of triumph. The Dutch champion of Jayco-AlUla, excellently supported by his team in the finale, got the better of the winner of the first two sprints Danny van Poppel (Red Bull BORA Hansgrohe) and Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl-Trek), reconnecting with a victory in Székesfehérvár that had been missing since July 4, 2024 (sixth stage of the Tour de France).
THE RACE. Riccardo Lucca (Karcag Cycling ÉPKAR Team), Kamil Małecki (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Louis Sutton (Euskaltel – Euskadi), Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti-VisitMalta), Viktor Vandenberghe (Pauwels Sauzen - Cibel Clementines) and Sander Nistad Stien (Epronex - Hungary Cycling Team) animated the day's breakaway, which, after passing the intermediate sprints in Oroszlány and Kápolnásnyék (won by Sutton) and the mountain prize in Nadap (1st Sevilla), remained in the lead until 29 kilometers from the finish when the peloton managed to neutralize it. At this point, wind and nervousness took over, encouraging several riders to form echelons and subsequently attempt to escape from the peloton. However, both operations were thwarted by the work of the sprinters' teams, which were all in full force and did not let any move go. Alessandro Covi's late attack at the entrance of the final circuit was also short-lived, but at least allowed the UAE Team Emirates rider (2nd overall) to gain 3 bonus seconds, bringing him closer to Lopez in the general classification. After this action was nullified, the sprinters' teams vigorously took control in the final kilometers, setting up a sprint from which, after the 3rd place in the opening stage and 2nd in the previous one, Dylan Groenewegen emerged victorious. The Jayco-Alula Dutchman this time managed to put both Danny van Poppel (Red Bull BORA Hansgrohe) and Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl-Trek), who were with him on the podium in the first two stages, behind him, thus celebrating after 317 days.
Behind them, Belgian Jules Hesters (Flanders-Baloise) finished ahead of Matteo Malucelli (XDS-Astana) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Q36.5), while Alberto Bruttomesso (Bahrain-Victorious) closed the top ten in 10th position. In the general classification, the top ten positions remained unchanged, but Covi, by taking the last intermediate sprint bonus, reduced his gap to Lopez and tomorrow, in the Etyek-Esztergom stage of 170 km with a final circuit featuring a 1000-meter cobblestone section at 8% to be tackled three times, could challenge the Colombian's leadership along with other yellow jersey contenders.
