The 2025 edition of Itzulia Women opened with Mischa Bredewold's winning sprint. The 24-year-old Dutch rider from SD Worx Protime decisively won the first stage of the Basque race, beating Millie Couzens, a 21-year-old British rider from Fenix-Deceuninck, and Margaux Vigié, a French rider from Visma Lease a Bike, at the finish line in Agurain. In the 148-kilometer stage, Eleonora Ciabocco finished in tenth place.
The first day of racing also saw Katia Ragusa (Human Powered Health) and Gaia Segato (BePink - Imatra - Bongioanni) as protagonists, animating the stage with a breakaway.
Several crashes were also notable: in the first kilometers, Claire Steels went down and was taken to the hospital after being assisted. Anna Van der Breggen was also unlucky, crashing with seven kilometers to go and, after getting back on her bike, was forced to chase, finishing her race 43" behind her winning teammate.
Today's success allows Bredewold to wear the leader's jersey, which she will display tomorrow in the second stage, the 116-kilometer Ugao-Miraballes / Igorre.
