Cycling atmosphere in the Pisa province in anticipation of the Giro d'Italia with next Tuesday's time trial, and a record number of registrations (200, which is the maximum number of participants) for the ninth edition of the City of Pontedera Grand Prix, the national classic for elite and under-23 riders scheduled for next Saturday. The organizational director Mauro Sardelli and U.S. Juventus Lari with president Antonio Giuntini have received maximum athlete participation, confirming that this race is now well-known and established, and that teams are happy to compete less than a month before the Giro d'Italia, set to start in mid-June.
The confrontation on Saturday will be interesting to follow on a 166-kilometer route with five passes over the La Montacchita climb, where last year Francesco Galimberti of Biesse Carrera won with a final breakaway. The race headquarters will be, as always, the Bellaria Cappuccini Sports Center, with start (at 12:50) and finish on Via Alcide De Gasperi, the traditional location for race finishes with its long and spacious straight. The City of Pontedera Grand Prix will be sponsored as usual by the Municipality, with Ecofor Service as the main sponsor, thanks to the commitment and passion of Rossano Signorini. The route features an initial section in line passing through Lari and the surrounding hills, then entering the Valdera and tackling the challenging La Montacchita climb for the first time after passing through Forcoli, returning to Pontedera after 50 km.
At this point, a 29-kilometer circuit will begin through Il Romito, S.Andrea, Forcoli, the La Montacchita climb, La Rotta, Pontedera, to be repeated four times with the finish expected around 5 PM. As for the registered teams, in addition to the Tuscan squads led by the multi-victorious Team Hopplà directed by Stefano Roncalli, which presents the two Tuscan champions Matteo Regnanti (elite) and Riccardo Lorello (under-23), there are many out-of-region formations with Continental teams and four foreign teams: the Ukrainian National Team, the Swiss V.C. Mendrisio, the Mexican A.R. Monex, and the British Zappi Racing Team.
