There's the Stelvio, the undisputed number 1, and there's the Sellaronda, the most famous ring in the Dolomites. There's the Gavia, which has given epic pages, and there's the Mortirolo, one of the most famous ascents in the world. And then, in the Olympus of great elevation gains, there's him: the Ca' del Poggio Wall, an iconic climb in the Prosecco hills, where the Giro d'Italia will pass for the eighth time on Sunday, May 25th. The ascent through the vineyards of San Pietro di Feletto has been included in the book "Climbs of Italy - The 100 bike climbs to do at least once in a lifetime", written by Gabriele Brunetti and Alberto Ferraris. A very well-informed and detailed work that collects, in the authors' words, "the dream climbs, those - precisely - that should be done ('must-do') at least once in a lifetime". "The joy that comes from completing a bicycle climb is indescribable - writes Davide Cassani in the preface -. And it's important for a cyclist to satisfy this thirst for mountains. Do it strong or slow? It doesn't matter. It doesn't change. The important thing is to do it".
The Ca' del Poggio Wall? "Veneto is a land that loves cycling and this road has the merit of entering the history of this sport", emphasize Brunetti and Ferraris. "During the climb, cyclists are focused on the effort, but one can admire the fascinating landscape in which the climb takes place, with hills cultivated with vineyards from which the famous Prosecco is produced, the bell towers of small villages and the reliefs of the Venetian Prealps". Comparisons abound with the great walls of international cycling, from the Grammont Wall, one of the symbols of the Tour of Flanders, to the Mûr-de-Bretagne in northwestern France, with which the Ca' del Poggio Wall is twinned. "The Ca' del Poggio Wall - add Brunetti and Ferraris - is steep, vertical from start to finish. The climb is quite regular, but records a peak of 18% after 400 meters and 16% at the end of the 1st kilometer".
Meanwhile, the Ca' del Poggio Wall already has a record: together with the Alpe San Pellegrino climb in Tuscany (11th stage), it will offer the most severe average gradient in this edition of the Giro d'Italia: 1160 meters of ascent at an average gradient of 12%. A vertical spectacle that on Sunday, May 25th, on the occasion of the passage of the 15th stage, the Fiume Veneto-Asiago, will host the Great Pink Festival open to all enthusiasts. While waiting for the cyclists to pass and then throughout the day, the climb in San Pietro di Feletto will be enriched with food and wine stands (churrasco and spit roast), music from Radio Company DJs, media partners of the event, the sympathy of the mascot Poggy, great guests from the world of sports and entertainment, and exceptional testimonials.
The Giro d'Italia Caravan is expected on the Wall at 11, while the stage passage will occur around 12:30. Access to the Wall will be as always free, with large parking areas at the foot of the climb. A maxi screen with the live broadcast of the stage is also planned. The passage of the Giro d'Italia on the Ca' del Poggio Wall will also be an opportunity for solidarity, with a fundraising in favor of the Italian Progeria Association founded by Sammy Basso - with his parents present - and the Collagene VI Italia Aps association chaired by Giulia Da Re, who resides right at the foot of the Wall, a group created by people suffering from degenerative neuromuscular diseases due to sixth collagen deficiency. Exactly one year after the last time, the great pink festival among the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will return to be proposed in the setting of what is now considered one of the most classic climbs of the Giro d'Italia. A pink spectacle, absolutely not to be missed.
