He left us in silence, with the same discretion with which he often approached life. Adriano Mei did not make it: the insidious and merciless illness took him away. And with him - born in Carbonia on May 13, 1955, and who would have turned 70 today - goes away an authentic piece of 1970s cycling, that of true effort, hard roads, and men forged in sweat and passion.
Adriano was a true rider. One who did not seek fame, but knew how to win with class and fight with honor. He had remarkable technical skills, a fighter's temperament, and rare tactical intelligence. He never backed down, not even on the most difficult days. He was admired, respected, and loved by teammates and opponents.
Life, however, is often cruel. It takes everything away, sparing no one. But it cannot take away the memory of what Adriano was: an exemplary athlete, a good man, a clear figure in a world that changes too quickly.
Those who knew him, spent time with him, and respected him... have the task - and the honor - of not forgetting him. Of telling who he was, what he did, how much he gave. And of gathering around his family in this moment of deep sorrow.
Goodbye Adriano, your example remains. With gratitude and affection, today we say farewell to you... pedaling also for you. Goodbye Adriano, may the earth be light upon you. RIP
