As the Giro d'Italia arrives in Italy and prepares to continue its race, Piedmont continues to work on securing the roads that will be the stage for the twentieth and penultimate stage of the race. In particular, in recent hours, the landslide that had invaded the descent from Colle del Lys has been removed.
At the Tetti Sabbionera hamlet in Rubiana, operations are proceeding at a rapid pace to reopen the Sp 197, which in mid-April had been hit by a landslide from the slope above the roadway, between km 6+500 and km 6+900, with mudslides and small to medium-sized rocks on the carriageway.
Yesterday afternoon, the vice-mayor of Metropolitan City of Turin, Jacopo Suppo, conducted an inspection to verify the placement of new jersey barriers that will allow partial traffic circulation and downstream road protection. "This is the third inspection in three weeks," Suppo emphasizes, "demonstrating the commitment shown by the Metropolitan City, which has spent over 500,000 euros on emergency interventions to reactivate viability in full safety. After completing the new jersey barrier placement, we will now begin installing rock fall nets on the upstream slope of the road. All this despite bad weather hindering the work".
After reopening to traffic, scheduled for Saturday, May 17, small bitumen interventions will be carried out to ensure safety and allow the regular passage of the Giro d'Italia caravan on May 31st. The Rubiana intervention is one of the most complicated to address the damage that April's bad weather inflicted on the road network managed by the Metropolitan City, carried out despite unfavorable weather conditions and two holiday weekends. We must thank our staff and the companies entrusted with the work".
In Sabbionera di Rubiana, after completing the necessary technical checks, the Metropolitan City of Turin has performed rock scaling of stones still susceptible to falling downstream from the upstream slope. Seismic refraction investigations and geophysical surveys were conducted to characterize the litho-stratigraphic and hydrogeological characteristics of the unstable slope. Extraction tests of the anchors were also performed to correctly size the definitive anchors, which will be used to fix the adherent nets that will mitigate the risk of landslides to reopen the Sp 197 with alternating one-way traffic and in safety on Saturday, May 17, as already announced.
Restoration activities for securing the area have involved the stretch from km 6+500 to km 6+900, including cleaning and reprofiling of the upstream slope, a first and urgent water management of the platform, with the restoration of ditches and channels, restoration of crossings, and the placement of new jersey barriers on the downstream side, now completed. Given that most of the disruption was initiated due to incorrect water management upstream, Viability Direction 2 of the Metropolitan City has requested the Municipality of Rubiana to perform urgent interventions for managing surface waters from inhabited areas, to prevent concentrated runoff on the eastern and southern slopes of Monte Bruiera and along municipal roads, with discharge onto the Sp 197.
