BGY AIRPORT GRANFONDO 2025 PRESENTED: BERGAMO OPENS ITS DOORS TO CYCLISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

GRAN FONDO | 03/04/2025 | 08:16

Just over a month remains until the BGY Airport Granfondo, which was presented to the media during a press conference held in Bergamo at the Traini Hall in the Banco BPM city headquarters.

The prestigious international amateur race, for 27 years, has brought thousands of cyclists from around the world to the streets of Bergamo and its province. This year's event is scheduled for Sunday, May 4th in Bergamo, with start and finish on Via Marzabotto, near the Stadium and Lazzaretto of Bergamo. As happened last year, the festival will already begin the day before with preliminary operations, race package pickup, and the opening of the ExpoVillage at the Santini Cycling headquarters on Via Zanica, in the Malpensata district.

Among the authorities who intervened during the presentation were: Fabrizio Zambetti (Head of Bergamo Brescia Lario Territorial Direction of Banco BPM), Giovanni Sanga (President of SACBO Spa), Marcella Messina (Sports Councilor of Bergamo Municipality), Edi Jareci (CEO of 3T Bike), Roberto Perico (Banco BPM) and organizer Giuseppe Manenti (G.M.S.).

The strengths of the BGY Airport Granfondo highlighted during the presentation include: strategic location, proximity to Milan Bergamo Airport, easily accessible from Italy and abroad, which favors international participation, and the particularly interesting BGY Bike Office offering cyclist assistance at the airport thanks to Vittoria Servizio Corse support; spectacular routes that showcase the natural beauty of the Bergamo province, combining technical challenges on roads loved by cyclists and breathtaking landscapes; institutional support and sponsors, involvement of local partners and authorities contributes to improving event quality and ensuring its continuity; complete cycling experience, because the event stands out not only for the race but also for side events, bike tests, and networking opportunities; safety and organization, with great attention to safety, well-monitored roads, efficient refreshment points, and route assistance. All these elements have consolidated the BGY Airport Granfondo as a reference granfondo in the international amateur cycling landscape.

The official "Segni Vitali" jersey, an exclusive collectible item branded by Santini Cycling, the bronze artwork prize "Timone" by Master Rando, collaboration with Fondazione Creberg and promotion of Cosetta Arzuffi's paintings, an in-depth look at the technical aspect of the Nembro-Selvino Climb, and the emotional connection with the never-forgotten friend Eugenio Mercorio were other aspects that characterized the presentation.

THE PROGRAM

On the eve, Saturday, May 3rd, the Santini Cycling company will open its doors (from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM) to thousands of cyclists and enthusiasts who will reach the city of Bergamo for the event, for race package pickup and to enjoy entertainment and refreshment areas.

On Sunday, May 4th, the traditional Lazzaretto area in Bergamo, near the start and finish on Via Marzabotto, will once again come to life and ignite the BGY Airport Granfondo 2025 festival.

From 6:10 to 6:50 AM, starting grids will open. At 7:00 AM, the first grid and race will start.

THE THREE ROUTES

The three routes are suitable for every type of cyclist and different fitness levels: ranging from the short 89.4 km route (1,400 m elevation gain), to the medium 128.8 km route (2,100 m elevation), up to the long 162.1 km route (3,050 m elevation). Six valleys are crossed (Val Cavallina, Valseriana, Val Serina, Val Brembana, Val Taleggio, Valle Imagna) and 37 municipalities.

The route is common to all until km 71, at the height of Ambria: after climbing the mythical Selvino ascent, the short route diverts to return to the finish line, while the medium and long routes continue towards Costa d'Olda and Forcella di Bura. After completing the descent to Brembilla (km 111), the intermediate distance turns towards the finish, while the bravest who choose to tackle the long distance will have two more challenging climbs to face, reaching Forcella di Berbenno first and then Costa Valle Imagna, where the final downhill section will bring the caravan back to the Bergamo finish line.

Total climbing kilometers are approximately 23 for the shortest route, 33 for the medium route, and nearly 49 for the long route.

For the GIM category, which allows any type of bicycle - muscular and electric, road, gravel, and MTB - to participate in the BGY Granfondo, a dedicated grid will be made available, and only the short distance will be available. Along the route, there will be a total of 5 refreshment points, plus the finish line refreshment and the final pasta party, included in the registration.
