MILAN. «IN 2025 LESS TRACK, MORE ROAD AND CLASSICS GOAL. I DREAM OF THE FIRST YELLOW JERSEY... IN TRICOLOR!»
PROFESSIONALS | 21/01/2025 | 18:16 di Nicolò Vallone Ready to face a new season, his fifth as a professional, the second with Lidl Trek, standing tall at his smiling 1.93m and with 16 career victories, plus two ciclamino jerseys at the Giro d'Italia, an equal number of Olympic track medals and various velodrome successes including the world individual pursuit in Ballerup, the Oscar tuttoBICI 2024 winner Jonathan Milan spent half an hour with Italian media during the training camp in Dénia.
Below are his statements, divided by themes:
2025 - "It's always nice to start a new season after a great winter between training camps and family vacations. I miss competition and I'm really 'fired up' for the upcoming year. Especially because, as you all know, there will be new prestigious goals that I can't wait to tackle."
PROGRAM - "Barring unforeseen circumstances or changes along the way, here's my calendar until July: Volta Valenciana, UAE Tour, Kuurne, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo, Bruges-De Panne, Gand-Wevelgem, Paris-Roubaix, three weeks at altitude, Dauphiné, Italian championships, Tour de France. I've heard that we sprinters don't do so well at altitude, but personally I've been there before and I don't think it will harm me."
THE CLASSICS - "I'm skipping a monument like Flanders because you shouldn't overlap too many races: it's better to select a few and aim either for the big target or to give the maximum for the team. Realistically, among those I'll participate in this year, Gand suits me best. Regarding San Remo, to my great satisfaction year after year I'm managing to stay with the group closer and closer to the finish: barring various directives from the team car which I'll obviously follow, I aim to conserve as much energy as possible on the Cipressa and be able to respond to rivals' attacks on the Poggio. The man to beat on paper is Tadej, but let's not forget my friend Ganna and my teammate Pedersen... Roubaix, in the end, is in a league of its own."
TOUR DE FRANCE - "I'm not just saying this, all races are important to me and now I'm focused on starting well in Valencia. Of course I'll do everything possible to be 100% for a race with the charm of the Grande Boucle, which I've never ridden and is moreover run in a period of the year I've never raced in. It will take a 100% team and train alongside me. Mads Pedersen? Obviously, I would have liked to have him by my side, but it wouldn't have been ideal to have such a strong rider work for me who deserves to go where he can take the personal spotlight. Surely it would be nice to win the first yellow jersey in the opening stage for sprinters, and it would be fantastic to do so wearing the tricolor jersey (Friuli and Gorizia are in the running to host the nationals: in which case, a particularly suitable route for Jonny would be expected, Ed.)"
TRACK - "Closing the first major chapter of my career with a record title represented the achievement of a goal and a challenge within a challenge: since I had been unwell right after the European road race, I had a week and a half to properly prepare for the Danish Worlds. Managing to win the pursuit in that way (3'59"153 at 60.212 km/h) was a true cherry on top. This year, however, I'll put the road first and give up many track races, even of the highest level: I'll still do several track training sessions, because it's an incredibly precious discipline for the road too."
PREPARATION AND POTENTIAL - "I hope that still 'little' has been seen of my potential and that I have wide margins for growth. I try to improve year after year and will continue to do so for many years to come. Now I'll use the extra time training on the road to simultaneously develop various aspects and raise the bar for the classics and the fight for the Tour's green jersey. In sprinting, I'm focusing on both strength and explosiveness and adjusting my movements, particularly moving my head less left and right to be more aerodynamic. Regarding gears, after always using the 54, I'm evaluating introducing the 56. Finally, I'm working on climbing endurance."
MATERIALS - "From Santini significant developments have arrived on race body and shoe covers, which are added to the Trek Madone SLR bike that was already released last year."
