LUDOVICO CRESCIOLI: «EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN TIMING. I HOPE TO GROW LIKE PIGANZOLI»

INTERVIEW | 18/01/2025 | 08:26

Ludovico Crescioli's WhatsApp status says it all: "I love Cycling". Simple, direct, effective. He wrote it when he was 13, but the passion has remained the same and in a few days he will officially debut among professionals with the Team Polti VisitMalta jersey, after a 2024 with the Technipes #inEmiliaRomagna jersey in which he was repeatedly one of the best U23 at the national level.
Son and brother of the trade - his father Adriano reached the amateur level and his brother Giosuè is still racing with Maltinti among amateurs - Crescioli made a name for himself particularly with the final podium at the Giro della Valle d'Aosta and the stage victory at the Tour de l'Avenir with the National team jersey. "I always believed in the possibility of turning professional, and the excellent start to 2024 quickly made me understand I was on the right path," said Ludovico. "I left a family team like Mastromarco looking for a different calendar, with a slightly higher level, some appearances with professionals and a few more stage races. Technipes proved to be the right choice, immediately creating a great connection with the entire environment and I basically did only stage races (8 in a year, more than he had done in his entire career up to that point, ed.), except for the end-of-season classics. I felt the change of pace immediately, had a good first part of the season and then, after an unlucky Giro Next Gen due to bronchitis, I managed to be a major protagonist in July, first finishing 14th at the Sibiu Tour with professionals, then ending on the podium at the Giro della Valle d'Aosta and, in August, winning a stage at the Avenir."
On January 21st, the young Tuscan will leave for a new training camp in Oliva, Spain, after which he will make his debut at the new Classica Camp de Morvedre (January 24) and then the Classica Comunitat Valenciana (January 26), before returning to train for a month and restarting with the Trofeo Laigueglia in March. "No tension, on the contrary, I can't wait to start. The excitement before the season's start is typical of this period. I had a few hiccups in December, but already after the first training camp I felt my condition improving. We'll see in the next month of training how my legs will respond. In the team, I knew some of the younger riders, with whom I had shared the National team jersey, but for the rest I'm getting to know them gradually. We're all quite young, with only Maestri and Tonelli being true veterans." Crescioli is the classic example of a rider who has grown at his own pace, without the pressure of having to prove everything at 18.
"I put no pressure on myself, I just think about improving. I believe I've moved at the right moment, everyone has their path and opportunities, and I'm satisfied with the choices I've made so far. This year I'll understand a bit more about what I can become. Piganzoli? He's been here for several years, but following a growth path similar to his would certainly be a good thing."
Just like Piganzoli, a year older than him, Ludovico feels comfortable when the road goes uphill: "In my imagination, the pure climber doesn't have a great turn of speed. I'm quite fast, a characteristic that is very useful in today's cycling. If I want to become a stage race rider, as I hope, I definitely need to improve in time trials. It's a discipline I've never really focused on, and for the path I have in mind, I'll certainly need to pay more attention to it in the coming years." His idol is at home: "Alberto Contador. His way of climbing was thrilling. I also like to be on the pedals when the road goes up. With him and Basso, there's certainly something to learn. Dream race? Once I would have said the Tour de France, the most important race, but growing up my passion for the Giro d'Italia has increased... so I say the Giro."
