TONEATTI: «STRADE BIANCHE AND TOUR OF FLANDERS IN MY FIRST YEAR AS A PROFESSIONAL»

In 2022, he was tackling his first road races, and less than 3 years later, he is about to start his professional career with XDS Astana. You certainly can't say that Davide Toneatti took long to adapt to the new discipline, after a life spent between cyclocross and MTB. The Kazakh team signed him shortly after his victory in the U23 Italian Cyclocross Championship in 2022, gave him the opportunity to gain experience in his satellite team, and now launches him among the big names, more mature and stronger.

For the 23 years old rider from Buja, the environment won't be entirely new: "I already knew those who were here last year,  some more and some less depending on how much I had raced with them - Toneatti recounts. I found a great atmosphere, everyone is helpful and ready to support you. We have many Italians, but having arrived late in road cycling, I don't have many connections in this environment, slowly I'm getting to know more people."

Precisely because he started road cycling at 20 years old, his potential is still all to be discovered. "Deep down, when I started, I hoped to become a professional, even though the problems I had in 2023 (mononucleosis first and foremost) were a big blow - the young Friulian added. This year I managed to recover well and reached this goal. From the first road races, I had intuited that I could be competitive in this discipline, finishing in the Top 20 in races like Trofeo Piva and Palio del Recioto despite having many technical and tactical gaps. For being my fourth and fifth road races ever, I didn't do badly at all. I know there are certainly people with a better engine than mine, but as I discussed during the training camp with my teammates, numbers aren't everything, there are numerous other factors that influence the outcome of your performance."

If in 2024 he raced almost only stage races, showing a good predisposition for efforts over multiple days, in 2025 we'll see him engaged in many one-day classics, even the most prestigious. "I'm still trying to understand if I'm suitable for long climbs, or if I'm more inclined to less prolonged efforts. In 2025, I have a challenging and stimulating calendar where I hope to understand more about myself."

Toneatti will race three Challenge Mallorca events, then head to the Tour of Oman, the Faun-Ardèche in France, and then Strade Bianche, the race he defines as "his dream". But that's not all, because then he'll fly to Belgium for various races, including, probably, the Tour of Flanders. "I've never raced on the road in Belgium, so I'm really curious to have this experience. I hope to lend a hand to Alberto Bettiol."

These cold days of December and January, until two years ago, were the peak season for cyclocross rider Toneatti: "I would certainly have enjoyed doing some races this year too, but I'm convinced that focusing on the road was the right choice. I often go out with a gravel bike to not lose confidence off-road, maybe in the future I'll return to make some appearances in the mud. I believe my cyclocross background was especially useful in bike handling, I notice I have more confidence compared to others, and then the explosiveness over short distances."

At least now he can enjoy the Christmas holidays a bit more: "Actually, I had gastroenteritis at Christmas, it wasn't a great day. New Year's Eve? We'll have a quiet dinner with friends, including the Milan brothers."
