AMADORI: "IN 2025 WORLD AND EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE VERY TOUGH, FOR OTHERS THERE WILL BE NATIONS CUP TRIALS"
INTERVIEW | 22/12/2024 | 08:20 di Alessandro Brambilla The press conference of Federal President Cordiano Dagnoni and the Giro d'Onore also represented a great gathering of technical commissioners and collaborators from various Italian national teams. The Italian Under 23 coach Marino Amadori has clear ideas about the setup of the new season. "In January – says Marino, born in 1957, a professional rider winner of Coppa Agostoni, Giro del Piemonte, Coppa Sabatini, Placci, Trofeo Matteotti, Gran Premio di Prato and a stage at Tirreno Adriatico –we will conduct tests on numerous Under 23 riders at the Montichiari velodrome. I will have the collaboration of the FCI Performance sector and we plan to test between 30 and 40 riders. We will also try to create a good base to start from through these tests. The invitation will be extended to riders from Continental teams and Italian club teams". Clearly, Amadori already has several names on his notebook. "Initially, I will rely heavily on riders registered with the Development teams. Simone Gualdi, Edoardo Zamperini, and Federico Savino are some of the reference athletes. Naturally, also Lorenzo Mark Finn, Junior World Champion 2024, and other guys". Amadori has great consideration for Pietro Mattio, with Visma-Leasebike Development since 2023. Amadori had him compete in the World Championships in Zurich. "Mattio – says the coach – has raced a lot for the team. In general, Pietro should think more about himself. He must also express more aggression, he has the potential to make a good impression". In 2025, a historic event will be celebrated: for the first time, the World Road Championships will be held in Africa. "In Rwanda – explains the Romagna coach – we will race at medium altitude, at 1500 meters. It will be another World Championship with a very challenging route. And the time trial will largely take place on the road race circuit, so it's another specialty that will require strong climber-rouleur skills. Between the European Championships in France, always on a very tough course, and the Road Worlds, there will be only a week's distance, the riders will have to give their all in a short time frame". Basically, Amadori removes Belletta, Luca Giaimi, and other fast rouleurs from the potential Azzurri for Europeans and World events. "Someone like Belletta can be useful to me in the Nations Cup, which includes 2 stage races". Giaimi has distinguished himself for winning world titles and records, especially on the track. And the coach from Predappio makes an assist to his colleague Marco Villa. "Precisely because the European Road Championships and World Championships in 2025 will be close together and with similar altitude characteristics I advise Giaimi to take good care of track activities in 2025, naturally in pursuit of titles". Riders like Manuel Oioli, with MBH Bank Colpack Ballan CSB from January 1st, and Mirko Bozzola, who we'll see at Padovani, are among the other finisseurs who can wear the Azzurra jersey in the Nations Cup. To the joy of many fans, athletes registered with teams categorized as World Tour and Professional by the UCI will not be able to participate in the 2025 Under 23 World and European Championships. "It's a good thing – emphasizes Amadori, who as a coach won the Road World Championships in 2019 with Samuele Battistella and in 2021 with Filippo Baroncini – becausein recent years, the Under 23 Worlds had become a "B" World Championship for professionals. Often my riders had to compete with those who had raced at the Tour de France or Vuelta a España". Will young professionals unable to enter the Elite National team for title races have to say goodbye to their Azzurra glory dreams in 2025? "Absolutely not. I will evaluate the possibility of fielding them in the Nations Cup, possibly at the Tour de l'Avenir and other competitions. For example, VF Group-Bardiani Csf has numerous valid young riders in its roster. However, the Reverberi family team is solely categorized as UCI Professional, so Filippo Turconi and other boys will only be considered for the Nations Cup".
