VISMA LEASE A BIKE. UIJTDEBROEKS: «I HAD A NERVE INFLAMMATION IN MY BACK, NOW I'M THINKING... ABOUT THE GIRO»

After a 2024 below his expectations due to some health problems, Cian Uijtdebroeks wants to achieve important goals for next year and among these could be the Giro d'Italia. Uijtdebroeks had a brief meeting with the media yesterday and wanted to talk about the health issues that compromised his first year with Visma – Lease a Bike.
The young Belgian was forced to withdraw from the Giro d'Italia due to pneumonia and then at the Vuelta was forced to stop due to Covid. Uijtdebroeks' problems, however, were not limited to viral forms: the most serious involved his legs, which had suddenly started to work poorly. Uijtdebroeks and the doctors couldn't find a reason and the situation didn't change, with the Belgian describing his legs as two pieces of wood. Initially, they thought it was a narrowing of the femoral artery, which would have prevented oxygen from reaching the legs, then in-depth examinations revealed an inflammation of the spinal nerves.
«Everyone saw that in some races I completely collapsed - Uijtdebroeks explained - We did a lot of research immediately after the Vuelta. We couldn't waste time because it was clear something was happening. Fortunately, we found the cause quite quickly. It was a problem in the lower back, where nerves radiate towards the legs. Fortunately, it's an injury that did not require surgery».
Cian Uijtdebroeks thus started a physiotherapy and gym exercise program and the back problems are resolving, although the pain is still present at times.
«I had lost stability on the bike. If I look back at some race images, I see that towards the end I start moving my entire body in all directions. Fortunately, after identifying the problem, I immediately started physiotherapy and specific training for the back and the entire area around the pelvis. We also had to completely adapt my bike position to provide relief to the back».
Uijtdebroeks and his team are optimistic and think he will soon be able to race without problems. «In a short time, my values for five-minute, ten-minute, and twenty-minute efforts have all improved. Right now we are very focused on my recovery and in the coming weeks we will have more clarity about the plans. At the moment, I'm not thinking about the Tour de France, it's a race that doesn't attract me right now. I would like to try the Giro d'Italia again, but before making any decisions, we need to wait and see the route».

In Visma, ne hanno avute di ogni nel 2024. Peccato perche' poteva essere un'anno di crescita tranquilla e graduale per questo talento. Nel 2025 avra' piu' pressione addosso dettate da sè stesso e dalla voglia di riscatto. Fossi in lui partirei appunto da un Gt meno complicato rispetto al Tour. Anche la doppia Giro - Vuelta potrebbe essere un'opzione
