UCI: WORLD RANKING WITH POINTS IN ALL DISCIPLINES? THE PROPOSAL SPLITS CYCLING

How could road cycling money reach less media-friendly and less sponsored disciplines? According to the UCI, an excellent system would be to sum up points from all disciplines for world rankings. This way, teams like Visma | Lease a Bike, Alpecin Deceuninck, and Ineos Grenadiers, which have riders competing in multiple disciplines, would have an incredible advantage.
UCI official Peter Van den Abeele illustrated this idea explaining how they are considering opening the scores that determine promotion and relegation in the World Tour to all cycling specialties. Thus, track, mountain bike, cyclocross, gravel, and even e-sports could provide points that, combined with those earned on the road, would impact the world ranking. This way, specialists from other disciplines could become interesting for teams focused only on road cycling, and there would also be changes in salaries.
To give a practical example, track cyclist Lindsay De Vylder, world champion in the omnium, currently under contract with Team Flanders Baloise, could suddenly become a very interesting rider for teams that only have road cyclists and are not at the top of the UCI ranking.
Moreover, this system could allow riders practicing multiple disciplines to not necessarily have to choose between road and track or between cyclocross and road.
At Alpecin-Deceuninck, where riders do track, mountain bike, and cyclocross, they rejoiced upon hearing this news, and the team's top manager, Philip Roodhooft, would be very happy if the UCI truly decides to take this path.
«Certainly, it's not a simple idea to implement - Roodhooft explained - but this system could give greater value to both various disciplines and weaker teams. I think of teams like Arkéa B&B Hotels, which could move forward this way, or cyclocross riders who, even if good, risk remaining without a team every year».
Not all teams look favorably on this hypothesis, and among the most skeptical is Patrick Lefevere, CEO of Deceuninck-Quick Step with Remco Evenepoel.
«You can't compare a one-hour race with a Dauphiné stage - Lefevere emphasized. And then what? Do we give points to Six Days riders? This doesn't seem like an effective system. Then there's the question of how many riders could be on a team. Today we have 30, but if we were to include cyclocross and track riders, how many riders would we end up with?»
Peter Van den Abeele tried to answer various questions on the subject through an interview with Sporza. «Everything is under discussion. They ask me which disciplines will assign UCI points. It's useless to say that a Cyclocross World Cup doesn't have the same weight as a Monument Classic on the road. We mainly want this to teach something to the teams. Everyone immediately talks about men, but many women would also benefit. If we look at athletes like Lotte Kopecky, and not just her, we would have cyclists who can earn points in different cycling disciplines. We are evaluating many things, and there is still time to make various decisions».

questa è una proposta dove emergono i più furbi e ricchi ..................come far morire il ciclismo. Per questi incompetenti una disciplina vale l'altra come d'altronde tutta la stampa che deve rosicare sui risultati.
