Martina Alzini succeeds Lieke Nooijen in the golden book of the Egmont Cycling Race Women, an event that today challenged the athletes on a local circuit drawn around Zottegem, in Belgium. At the end of 128 kilometers of racing and a great chase, the Milan-based Cofidis rider obtained the second victory of her career by sprinting past Dutch rider Lonneke Uneken (VolkerWessels Cycling Team).
Around mid-race, Francesca Pellegrini (UAE Team ADQ) launched an action that generated a breakaway with Spanish rider Alicia González (St Michel - Preference Home - Auber93), Dutch rider Sabrina Stultiens (VolkerWessels Cycling Team), 2023 edition winner Heidi Franz (Cynisca Cycling), new Belgian national gravel champion Marthe Truyen (Fenix-Deceuninck) and Norwegian Sigrid Ytterhus Haugset (Team Coop – Repsol).
The six-rider breakaway had a maximum advantage of 1'40" over the peloton, which however, thanks to the pace set mainly by Liv AlUla Jayco and Cofidis, significantly reduced the gap. Two laps from the finish, the delay was 40" while at the bell lap, the distance between the breakaway and the chasers was 15".
Feeling the peloton nearby, just after passing the finish zone, Pellegrini attacked again with Haugset and Truyen on her wheel; the Norwegian and the Belgian subsequently gained an advantage over the 21-year-old from Bergamo's Capizzone. Twelve kilometers from the finish line, Truyen dropped back and four kilometers later the group neutralized Haugset's solo attempt.
