In the finale of the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia Women, on the feared slopes of Monte Nerone, we saw many things: the magnificent attack by Elisa Longo Borghini and Silvia Persico, the comeback that allowed Sarah Gigante to conquer the second stage victory of the 2025 Giro Rosa, and Marlen Reusser, who, in difficulty, was unable to counter the attack of the Italian champion and had to give up the pink jersey.
But even after the finish line, we saw something worth telling. Exhausted and distraught from losing the pink jersey, the Swiss Movistar captain got off her bicycle and sat on the asphalt in tears. At that point, Antonia Niedermaier, a 22-year-old from CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto, who is the young classification leader and fifth overall, came to comfort her. A hug, some words of encouragement, and a slight smile returned to Reusser's lips.
Later that evening, Marlen posted a message of thanks to Antonia on social media. "Dear Antonia, We barely know each other. You are ten years younger, and we are competing for the General Classification of this @giroditaliawomen. But even though you had just finished an incredible effort, you found the kindness to comfort me so thoughtfully! It helped me so much in this moment 🥹 and I am touched by your greatness. With affection!" Marlen wrote.
