The official route of the Giro d'Italia 110 was presented today at the Sala Sinopoli of the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone in Rome. The start is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 from Trieste, while the grand finale will be, as has become recent tradition, in the Capital on Sunday, May 30. The route is particularly demanding, as evidenced by the figure of 50,250 meters of elevation gain, spread across the 3,418.9 kilometers on the program.
FIRST WEEK
The Giro d'Italia 2027 starts from Trieste, and from the first week it alternates opportunities for sprinters, rolling terrain, and the first mountain appointments. The Corsa Rosa provides, for the first stage, departure and arrival in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia city, with a foray into Slovenia in between and three altimetric challenges in the final 40 kilometers. The second stage, from Ljubljana to Koper, will take place entirely in Slovenian territory, while the following one, from Cervignano to Possagno, brings the race back to Italy with an insidious 163-kilometer route.
The Corsa Rosa will then descend into Emilia Romagna with the Argenta - Misano Adriatico stage, with the Marco Simoncelli Autodrome that will likely be the theater of a battle between the sprinters. The first real test for the general classification contenders is scheduled for the fifth stage, from Filottrano, where the Giro d'Italia will pay tribute to Michele Scarponi 10 years after his death, to Sarnano-Sassotetto: just 139 kilometers, but with 3,300 meters of elevation gain, a profile that could already produce significant time gaps. The race continues along the Adriatic coast with Alba Adriatica - Lanciano, before tackling an individual time trial with a mountain-top finish of 19.6 kilometers from Sulmona to Campo di Giove. Over the weekend the Corsa will return to Naples for the sixth consecutive year before climbing on Sunday, May 16 with the Itri - Subiaco-Monte Livata stage, a mountain-top finish already seen last year at the Giro Next Gen and which will close nine very demanding days.
SECOND WEEK
After the first rest day, the race departs from Lazio towards the central Apennines. The Palombara Sabina - Norcia stage, 218 kilometers with 3,600 meters of elevation gain, presents a route with many ups and downs. The next day, the stage from Gualdo Tadino to Scarperia, with a finish at the Mugello Autodrome, is the longest of the race and offers another chance for the sprinters. The race continues in Tuscany with an unprecedented mountain-top finish in the Montecatini Terme - Zeri stage, the Bartali Stage of this edition, in which the Corsa Rosa will discover the Passo dei Due Santi.
The thirteenth stage, from Borgo Val di Taro to Reggio Emilia, instead offers a decidedly simpler profile, with 176 kilometers representing another opportunity for the sprinters. The second weekend promises to be particularly important for the general classification. The program includes on Saturday a 187-kilometer stage with as much as 4,900 meters of elevation gain from Cantù Arena to Piani di Bobbio/Valtorta, which will see the Corsa Rosa climb in order Ghisallo, Culmine di San Pietro, Miragolo San Salvatore and Alino, and on Sunday a 37.3-kilometer time trial from Monza to Milan, with the start inside the National Autodrome.
THIRD WEEK
After the rest day, the Giro enters its decisive phase with the stage from Sondrio to Aprica of 192 kilometers and 5,700 meters of elevation gain: a figure that places it among the hardest days of the entire route. It will be one of the key passages for those aiming for the final victory with the double ascent of the Mortirolo - Pantani Mountain - and the Gavia - Cima Coppi. The next day brings another chance for the sprinters from Chiari to Vo' before returning to the mountains with the Rovereto - Madonna di Campiglio stage, the seventh mountain-top finish of this edition. Following this, the Rovereto - Sacile stage, 199 kilometers long with 3,000 meters of elevation gain, is an ideal opportunity for attackers on the eve of the last mountain-top finish. Six years after Lorenzo Fortunato's victory, the Giro d'Italia returns to Monte Zoncolan in the stage starting from Pordenone and which will see the ascent of the Carnic Alps climbed from the Ovaro side, where Chris Froome triumphed in 2018. Closing the race will be the now traditional closing parade in Rome, which for the fifth consecutive year will see the winner of the Corsa Rosa lift the Trofeo Senza Fine to the sky in the Eternal City.
