At the end of an important season, Alessandro Fancellu will join the WorldTour in 2027, having signed a two-year contract with GreenEDGE Cycling.
The Italian rider claimed a stage at the recent Giro d'Abruzzo and finished second in the general classification at the Czech Tour this season; the team's management believes the twenty-six-year-old still has considerable potential to express. Fancellu has spent much of his career racing at Pro Continental level; thanks to a series of notable results, GreenEDGE Cycling will now offer him the opportunity to make his WorldTour debut starting next season.
In recent seasons, the Como-based rider has made his mark in minor stage races, achieving top-10 finishes in the general classification at the Tour of Turkey, Tour of Slovenia, Tour of Hungary, and Tour of Hainan in 2026. The overall victory at the Tour of Japan and second place at the Czech Tour further confirm his qualities as a general classification rider.
"I chose Team Jayco AlUla because, from our first meetings, I understood I was dealing with an extremely professional team. I'm truly excited to become part of a team with such an important tradition. The first step will be to prove I can compete in the WorldTour; my main objective is to participate in one of the three Grand Tours. I want to demonstrate that I'm worthy of a Grand Tour selection and can deliver my best performance. Becoming a professional is undoubtedly a dream come true. The WorldTour represents the aspiration of every young cyclist starting this sport. I want to prove I deserve this step up and confirm the good results I've achieved in lower-level races. I'm also convinced that joining such a prestigious team will help me grow enormously as a professional rider. I'm a rider who performs well on rolling terrain, including short but steep climbs. So far I've proven competitive in week-long stage races and I can't wait to test myself in longer events, such as three-week races."
Gene Bates, Performance Manager of the Australian team, adds: "It's fantastic to welcome Alessandro to our team; he's already well known to part of our staff, having grown up not far from our operational base in Italy. This year he's had an exceptional season, demonstrating great consistency and always achieving excellent results, even in very demanding races. Thanks to his qualities, already widely demonstrated this season, he will significantly strengthen our climbing group."
THANKS TO MBH. Fancellu continues: "My thanks go to the entire MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort group, which welcomed me during a relaunching phase of my career and with whom I've worked productively. I'm leaving a professional team capable of making the best use of available resources. My step into the WorldTour is a result that should be shared by everyone. Now we have the final efforts ahead of us."
Antonio Bevilacqua, team manager, also bids farewell to Fancellu with these words: "A young man who proved professional and gave his all in this challenge. We know how many sacrifices he faced and we shared a path that brought him into the top 70 of the world rankings. As far as we're concerned, we were able to appreciate his qualities and the seriousness with which he distinguished himself throughout the year. Now we can only wish him the very best for his sporting career."
