The first day of the Heusden Zolder junior World Track Cycling Championships brings another medal to the Italian cycling movement: the bronze in the men's Team Sprint, conquered with a display of great technical compactness.
The trio composed of Filippo Cusumano, Matteo Ghirelli and Alberto Veglia — with Cesare Castellani fielded in the qualifications — closes the bronze medal race in 44"683, a time that earns the third step of the world podium. The gold medal goes to the AIN team with Mokeev, Zybin and Demish (with Butenko in qualification), who stop the clock at 44"367. In a hard-fought final, the trio surpasses Great Britain's Larigo, Holt and Hepburn, second in 44"867.
The women's junior Team Sprint event concludes with a harsh outcome for the Italian team. In contention for bronze, the trio composed of Vanessa Masotti, Maya Ferrante and Sara Peruta — with Martina De Vecchi fielded in the qualifications — was disqualified by the Jury for an irregular changeover executed by Masotti. A decision that relegated Italy to eighth place, erasing a performance that up to that point had been fully worthy of the podium.
The world title goes to the AIN team with Pershina, Solozobova and Luchina (with Ermolova in qualification), who prevail with an excellent 48"759. The Russians surpass in the final Germany's Raake, Colberg and Prochnau (with Rosinski in the qualifications), second in 49"204.
Bronze goes to the Czech Republic, thanks to the trio Benesova, Krupalova and Jarosova, who finish in 50"673.
