A tragedy leaves the cycling world breathless. While the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal was underway, taking the peloton from Melgaço to Fafe, an accident claimed the life of Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old British cyclist riding for NSN Development Team, the younger brother of Joshua.

The organizers of the Portuguese competition issued a statement expressing their deepest condolences for the death of the British cyclist. The statement also specified that following the serious accident, the race was neutralized until the finish line and no scheduled award ceremonies were held.

According to reports from the Bola website and various other Portuguese sources, a man driving a car, ignoring the instructions of race marshals, entered the race course in the opposite direction to the riders' flow, hitting Finlay.

The reconstruction was confirmed by the Portuguese Civil Guard: Tarling had fallen far behind the other competitors due to a mechanical issue and was trying to make up lost ground. Suddenly he encountered a commercial vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on his path and was struck by it: a violent impact that caused the death of the nineteen-year-old on impact. It remains to be explained how a vehicle unrelated to the race convoy ended up on that road.

MESSAGE FROM NSN TEAM. This is the message from Finlay's team: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Finlay Tarling, which occurred today during the Volta a Portugal. Fin was a much-loved member of our team, but above all he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many people. We will miss him deeply. Our deepest condolences go to Fin's parents, Michael and Dawn, to his brother Josh, and to all those who had the privilege of calling him a friend. Rest in peace Fin."

WARNING FROM THE PORTUGUESE FEDERATION PRESIDENT. Appearing before journalists, the president of the Portuguese Federation Câncido Barbosa emphasized how today's accident represents a very sad and very difficult moment for the cycling world. The former professional, now head of Portuguese cycling governance, recalled that: "The safety of athletes must be the highest priority." He then addressed the athletes, encouraging them to find strength to complete the Volta a Portugal.

FINLAY TARLING'S YOUNG CAREER. Despite his youth, Finlay had particularly distinguished himself at this year's Tour du Rwanda, securing second place in the stage finishing in Musanze, won by his teammate Itamar Einhorn; less than two months ago he had also finished on the podium of the British national U23 time trial championship, placing behind Ben Wiggins and Henry Hobbs.

UPDATE AT 00:32 - According to the Lusa news agency citing sources within the organization, NSN Development Team would have decided to withdraw from the race as a sign of mourning.

UPDATE AUGUST 15 AT 11:50 NSN Team has just issued a statement confirming the team's withdrawal from the Portuguese race. The team will continue its activities at the Czech Tour and the Arctic Race. The statement reads: "Following the tragic death of Fin Tarling, the NSN development team has withdrawn from the remaining stages of the Volta a Portugal. With the full support of Fin's parents, the WorldTour team will continue racing at the Czech Tour and the Arctic Race of Norway. We will keep Fin in our hearts as we race in his honor, doing what he loved most. We want to thank everyone in the cycling community and beyond for the incredible support during this difficult time."
