In recent days, the mayor of Sestriere met with Bernard Hinault, the legendary five-time Tour de France champion, and Philippe Colliou, director of the Tour de l'Avenir, a prestigious event for young riders preparing for the Grande Boucle, in Susa.
At the center of the meeting was Sestriere's bid to host new international cycling events, with full support from Elvio Chiatellino, a lifelong cycling enthusiast who has been instrumental in bringing major Tour de France stages to Italian territory (2011 and 2024 in Pinerolo).
These efforts have taken concrete form through a letter sent by the Municipality of Sestriere to Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France. The subject: "the continued interest of the Municipality of Sestriere in hosting, in 2027 or 2028, a Tour de France stage finish, ideally after the climb of the Colle delle Finestre for an epic mountain stage. An event that would further enhance Sestriere's candidacy as European Capital of Sport in 2028 with prestigious, internationally significant events" - reads a statement from the Sestriere administration.
