With the manifest superiority displayed in the first half of the Tour de France and the nearly four minutes already inflicted on his closest rival in the general classification, Tadej Pogacar has laid very solid foundations for the conquest of his fifth Grande Boucle of his career.
Although two weeks still remain until the conclusion in Paris, his dominance so far has been absolutely unassailable and, by virtue of this, some insiders have already begun to look beyond the great yellow celebration of July, focusing on the upcoming appointments on the phenomenal Slovenian's agenda.
Among these, in addition to the World Championships in Canada (whose participation by the World Champion is already certain), stands out a commitment regarding which the UAE Team Emirates-XRG and its star have not yet cleared up doubts, namely the Vuelta a España. Regarding participation in the Spanish stage race, Pogacar and his entourage have always maintained reservations, suggesting, as Gianetti reiterated yesterday to RAI microphones, that they would make a decision once the fatigue accumulated after the three weeks spent on French roads had been assessed, but in the meantime, right across the Alps, a discrete optimism has recently filtered through regarding the participation of the native of Klanec in the Iberian Grand Tour.
In particular, it was AS that reported how in these recent hours the scenario of a Pogacar starting from Monte Carlo (where he also resides) next August 22nd is acquiring increasingly concrete reality, with Daniel Miranda learning how the Vuelta is "a very strong possibility on the table" for the class of '98 and his team.
If this option were to transform from a hypothesis still to be verified into a real commitment, Pogacar would return to the Vuelta 7 years after his last participation (concluded with 3 stage victories and third place in the general classification) with the possibility of finally acquiring the "Triple Crown" and, secondly, would follow a different approach to the world championship race compared to the one followed last year (and, on paper, valid for this season as well), since, being engaged in Spain, it would not be possible for him to do the general rehearsals in Canada at the GP de Quebec and the GP de Montreal, both scheduled in the final days of the Iberian stage race.
To decide on all of this will obviously be, once a careful assessment of his psychophysical conditions has been made (an operation which a year ago, between fatigue and a knee problem, caused the Vuelta option to fade away), Pogacar himself, whose rendezvous with the Spanish race in any case, even in the event of withdrawal in this 2026, is only a matter of time before it comes to pass.
