Romain Gregoire wins the second stage of the Tour de Suisse, the Locarno-Locarno 157.7 km route and it's a memorable day for Groupama FDJ United, the team that also scored with Gruel at the Route d'Occitanie. The Frenchman outsprinted his breakaway companions Camprubi and Lemmen with Filippo Zana closing in fourth place while the chase by Pogacar and Vacek fell short by just a few seconds.
THE RACE. Attacks from the start, also because after just a few kilometers the Monte Ceneri climb was tackled and it was precisely on this ascent that a group of attackers formed consisting of Emiel Verstrynge (Alpecin PremierTech), Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious), Ewen Costiou and Romain Gregoire (Groupama – FDJ United), Bauke Mollema (Lidl Trek), Filippo Zana (Soudal Quick-Step), Finlay Pickering (Team Jayco AlUla), Chris Hamilton (Team Picnic PostNL), Bart Lemmen (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Marco Schrettl (XDS Astana Team), Milan Vader, Marcel Camprubí and Fred Wright (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) and Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling Team).
15 kilometers from the finish line, on the Fanghi climb, here comes the acceleration by Eulalio, followed by Zana, Lemmen, Pickering and Verstrynge while behind the group of favorites, reduced to no more than 25 riders, continues its recovery effort with Pogacar in domestique mode on the very technical descent. The world champion's move was clearly in favor of Narvaez who attempted an attack with Vacek, then sat up and at that point Pogacar drove straight ahead with the Czech rider.
The two reached Eulalio and continued their chase until closing just 4 seconds behind the winner. Naturally Pogacar retains the race leader's jersey and has extended his advantage to 2'50" over Carapaz and 3'07" over Bagioli.
