The eighth and final stage of the 2026 Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes belongs entirely to Isaac Del Toro. With an attack 9 kilometers from the finish of the Beaufort-Plateau de Solaison (Brison) climb, the Mexican from UAE Team Emirates-XRG not only secured the concluding stage of this short French stage race in solitary fashion but also claimed the overall classification with the yellow jersey, finishing 54 seconds ahead of an impressive Luke Tuckwell (who finished 8th today, 1'43" behind the stage winner) and 1'17" ahead of Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek).
THE RACE
The latest frantic start of this week of racing saw Laurens De Plus and Carlos Rodríguez (Netcompany INEOS), Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon CGA CGM), Georg Steinhauser (EF Education–EasyPost), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step), Harold Tejada (XDS Astana Team) and Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama–FDJ) break away on the slopes of the Col du Pré, the first of four categorized climbs of the day. Among the seven, once they crested the summit, Geoffrey Bouchard (TotalEnergies) and Kevin Vauquelin (Netcompany INEOS) bridged across. Behind them came news of retirements before Paul Seixas (Decathlon CGA CGM) and subsequently Valentin Ferron (Cofidis) and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) withdrew from the race.
On the Montée de Bisanne, while Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) launched a solo attack from the main group (which proved unsuccessful) to try to rejoin the race leaders, up front Bouchard, Vauquelin and Bisiaux lost contact, though the first was caught by the peloton while the other two managed to hold on and rejoin their breakaway companions on the descent.
The subsequent Col d'Aravis, both on the climb and descent, produced no changes to the race situation except for a reduction in the gap between the breakaway riders and the group of yellow jersey wearer Tuckwell, who, pulled by his Lidl-Trek teammates, moved to within about forty seconds of the attackers at the 40-kilometer-to-go mark. However, it was with a 50-second gap between the two groups that the grueling final ascent of Plateau de Solaison – Brison began, a climb where, from the very first meters, it was UAE Team Emirates XRG who took on the pacemaking duties among the chasers.
This meant that at the 9.3-kilometer mark, the yellow jersey lost contact with the main group of contenders, and three hundred meters later Isaac Del Toro launched his solo attack, quickly absorbing the last remaining breakaway riders from the opening hour who had tenaciously held on at the front, namely Paret Peintre and Rodriguez. Soon, however, these two were forced to drop Del Toro's wheel as the Mexican proceeded solo while, behind him, first Tulett activated for Jorgenson and then Skjelmose for Ayuso.
The pace and determination of the native of Ensenada, however, proved more effective than the pedaling of the other contenders for overall victory, who, kilometer after kilometer, lost ground to the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider. This trend prompted Ayuso to produce an acceleration that, at the 5.5-kilometer mark, launched him in pursuit of Del Toro, trimming the Mexican's lead to 40" at the 4-kilometer mark from the finish. Del Toro's response was not long in coming as, informed of the Spaniard's approach, the gap between the two quickly returned to over 50 seconds at the 3-kilometer mark.
Behind the leading two, the hunt for a podium spot erupted with Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) making a determined move, noticing Jorgenson's struggles before the 2-kilometer banner, launching decisively with the aim of putting more seconds between himself and the American and trying to dislodge him from the top three overall. The attempt, however, failed to deliver the desired results for the Norwegian, who, while Del Toro extended his advantage over Ayuso to claim the stage-and-overall double with a clean minute over the Iberian rider (second at the finish and third overall behind the Mexican), did not successfully complete his chase, taking third on the stage but not the top 3 in the general classification where he finished in fifth position instead.
Who did manage to secure a top-three overall finish was a surprising Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull BORA hansgrohe) who, not foundering on the final climb thanks to crucial support from Van Gils, crossed the line alongside a spent Jorgenson with 1'43" of deficit, thus defending his second-place position just behind the third-youngest stage race winner in Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes history (only Greg Lemond, first in 1983 at 21 years and 345 days, and Louis Rostollan, victorious in 1958 at 22 years and 158 days, were younger).
Del Toro, with his eighth victory of 2026 (his 29th in his career), also claims the white jersey as best young rider and, with an eye toward the Tour de France (where, on paper, he will race in support of designated leader Tadej Pogacar), sends an unmistakable signal about his form and a level that today, it cannot be ruled out, could earn him a podium finish in Paris as well.
