On the rest day of the Giro d'Italia, the essay "Between Road and Civilization – A Personal Story, A Collective Responsibility" written by Marco Cavorso was presented.
Marco is the father of Tommaso, killed by a man who made a reckless overtaking maneuver with his van on August 26, 2010, and ended the life of Tommy, who that cursed day was riding his bicycle wearing the jersey of the historic team l'Aquila di Ponte a Ema. Tommy will forever be 13 years old, not because of an "accident" but because a person decided to overtake head-on across a solid line, invading the opposite lane and hitting him frontally.
Since that day Marco Cavorso and his loved ones have fought so that no other family would fall into the black hole caused by an unjust and preventable death. For Marco, a journey into awareness began. Road violence is the leading cause of death among young Italians and we cannot imagine it to be acceptable. This is why Marco founded the association I Respect the Cyclist with Maurizio Fondriest and Paola Gianotti, and with the Association of Italian Professional Cyclists he fights for safer roads for everyone.
Today, alongside champions such as the 1988 Renaix world champion, ACCPI vice president Silvia Parietti, the 2008 Varese world champion Alessandro Ballan and former pro and author of the book "Tommy Knew How to Ride" Paolo Alberati (in the photo with Federico Borselli, driver of the UAE Team Emirates XRG bus), Cavorso explained how the idea of writing this book came about: "Road safety is not only about those who have already lost someone. It is especially about those who can still prevent it from happening. It is not a technical text, intentionally, because it wants to be a source of reflection and doubt, a stimulus for consciences in search of greater awareness. There is still too little awareness of the dangers of the road. The objective of this book is primarily educational".
Designed for middle and high school students, as well as adults, it is available for purchase on Amazon. "The road is not just asphalt. It is a social space. It is a place of relationship, of responsibility and, in a way, of power – Cavorso continues. - The way we cross it tells much about what we are as a community. Because, in the end, the road is not just the place we travel. It is the place where a society decides what value to give to the lives of others. This is why I imagined this book as a journey. A voyage towards awareness. At the end you will find a simple tool I have called the Road Awareness Index (RAI). It does not measure how good you are at driving. It measures how much we truly understand the risks, relationships and responsibilities that inhabit the space of the road. If this book succeeds in increasing even a small part of the awareness of those who read it, then perhaps it can help save someone's life. Maybe that of a son. Between road and civilization there is a space. It is the space where we decide how much the lives of others are worth".
