The day of pink withdrawals continues. On medical advice, Mikel Landa will observe a period of rest and recovery and will not take part in this year's Giro d'Italia. Mikel faced a difficult winter due to illness, which delayed the start of his season, before returning to racing at the Volta a Catalunya last month.
In April, during the second stage of the Itzulia Basque Country, he was involved in an accident with an organization vehicle. Although he managed to finish the stage, it was decided that he would not continue the race. Under the supervision of the team's medical staff, Mikel underwent further examinations, which revealed a small fracture to the pelvis.
Given the nature of the injury, it was initially not easily identifiable, but subsequent checks have now provided a clear diagnosis. The fracture has already begun to heal, but will require a further period of recovery.
"I am obviously disappointed, because I worked hard to return after a difficult winter and was starting to feel good again at the Itzulia," said Mikel. "I felt some discomfort, but the type of fracture initially made it difficult to identify precisely. Now that we have a clearer picture, I can focus completely on my recovery."
The 36-year-old Basque rider added: "It's a shame to miss the Giro d'Italia, especially since I was motivated to return after last year. But the priority now is to recover my fitness and regain my condition, then we'll look ahead and set new objectives as the season progresses."
