Giulio Pellizzari unleashes his victory cry at the finish line in Val Martello, where the second stage of the Tour of the Alps concluded. The Marche-born rider perfectly crowns the outstanding work of his Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team and also claims the leader's jersey in the general classification.
On the final climb, the German team deployed its pieces with Finn working brilliantly before closing on Arensman and Storer and then pulling for Pellizzari. But in the decisive final sprint, it was Vlasov who made his move just 400 meters from the line on the group of favorites, drove hard and disrupted Arensman's plans, who was caught off guard by Pellizzari. Second place for the Ineos Dutchman, third for an excellent Gaffuri, followed by Bernal, Vlasov and Finn.
Disappointment for Michal Storer who had his Tudor team working hard but lost the wheels of the best riders in the finale, and for Jayco AlUla's O'Connor, who was also long in the lead but then literally fell apart on the final climb. Also worth noting is the 12th place finish for 43-year-old Domenico Pozzovivo, who crossed the line in the chase group 19 seconds behind the winner, right on the heels of a young rider, Slovenian Omrzel, who is 24 years his junior.
THE RACE. After 8 km, the 9 riders who characterized practically the entire stage launched their attack: Oliver Stockwell (Bahrain Victorious), Mattia Gaffuri (Picnic PostNL), Luca Verrando (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali), Davide Bais (Polti VisitMalta), Dominik Röber, Emanuel Zangerle (Team Voralberg), Benjamin Eckerstorfer, David Paumann, Valentin Poschacher (Austria). Their maximum advantage was 4'15". The breakaway exploded on the first slopes of Val Martello with Bais initially being the only one to stay in Gaffuri's wheel. The Picnic PostNL rider was the sole leader to remain at the front of the race and managed to secure an excellent third place.
