Agostino Omini never raced but for racing - and for cycling as a whole - he never stopped running. And how could a book dedicated to the great administrator be titled anything other than "A Life in the Race - From Milan to the World: Behind the Scenes of Great Cycling"?
The book - which will be officially presented Saturday, May 2nd at 11 a.m. at the Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum - was commissioned and curated by his daughters Antonella and Elisabetta Omini and published by Antea Edizioni by Angelo Giudici: what motivated the two authors was the desire to share the "logbook" of a man who traversed the twentieth century with vision and courage.
From humble beginnings as a messenger boy at age 12 for just 7 lire a day, to the heights of the International Cycling Union (U.C.I.), the life of Agostino Omini is a mirror of the Italian economic boom and the rebirth of sport. Thus emerges the account of a journey through the "hieroglyphics" of the unpublished diaries of the man who modernized world cycling: "notebooks" of notes that Omini compiled for decades, preserving within them anecdotes, political challenges and visions that transformed the world of two wheels.
Thanks to the valuable contribution of Ivo Bensa, Omini's intimate friend and authentic "Rosetta Stone", because capable of interpreting the administrator's handwritten notes, there are truly many anecdotes that come back to life and reveal secrets and behind-the-scenes stories linked to the Milan Six-Day race as well as the birth of the UEC, the work in the Italian Cycling Federation and that carried out for the UCI. Enriching the volume is the foreword by Pier Augusto Stagi who knew and worked with Omini.
