Everyone was waiting for the world champion, the great favorite of the day, and the Slovenian did not disappoint, crossing the finish line in Oudenaarde solo. One by one, Tadej Pogacar freed himself from his rivals, securing his third victory at the Tour of Flanders, once again in spectacular fashion.
This time the Slovenian did not win easily and had to work very hard, and his attention, besides Mathieu van der Poel, was on Remco Evenepoel, whom he immediately considered as an opponent to control.
«It was a tough race - said a visibly tired Tadej Pogacar - I absolutely wanted to prevent Remco (Evenepoel, ed.) from coming back because I know how quickly he is capable of recovering. So I wanted to keep him at a disadvantage, I didn't want him to get too close. I know how great his endurance is and he's someone who can always beat you in the final».
Pogacar calculated everything perfectly and after the attack in which only Van der Poel managed to resist, he let Evenepoel come closer only to drop him again with the intention of wearing him out. Pogacar this season has participated in only three races (Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo and Tour of Flanders), and managed to win them all, setting a new personal record.
«It was an incredible race. I really don't know what to say. It was extremely hard from the start. After that, it was just a matter of waiting, but without being able to rest because we always had to push. I'm happy that our group worked more or less together. This certainly gave me an advantage».
Three races won out of three contested, this makes Pogacar once again the strongest of all. The Slovenian, besides being strong, also has an incredible ability to recover and next week he wants to win Paris-Roubaix as well.
«I don't race many events, so the pressure to win is high. So far everything is going well. Next week I want to enjoy the pavé of Roubaix. I can only be satisfied with what I've done so far, and I will certainly be motivated for next week».
