Finally Dylan Groenewegen has left behind that period when he wasn't winning and wasn't the strongest sprinter in the group. This year, however, he has the motivation and the form, but also a new team, Unibet Rose Rockets, a French-licensed outfit with which the Dutch rider has managed to be reborn.
Today in Bruges, Groenewegen claimed his third consecutive victory, following his two wins in Roeselare and Koksijde, and in total, since the start of the year, the Amsterdam sprinter has four successes to his name. "I have to admit it, it's been a decidedly good week in Belgium," Groenewegen said after the podium ceremony. "The typical weather you find in Belgium and the Netherlands at this time of year probably helped me. It was a really tough race with a lot of wind and in the end we had some rain. So yes, it was a rather difficult finish."
There were crashes in the bunch and Groenewegen himself had to deal with a puncture, but in the end he managed to get back and thanks to his team, he found the best position for the sprint.
"We weren't very lucky in the race with a flat tire before the finish line. But in the end we did an excellent job and the guys put me in a good position. Then they went off quite early, and I had to put all my strength into getting first."
Groenewegen is in his first season with Unibet Rose Rockets, a team completely different from Visma and Jayco AlUla, but everything seems to be working perfectly. "I don't know what our secret is, maybe the fact that we challenge each other and want to get the best out of one another and that's beautiful. We have fun and that's for sure: when you win, you have fun. But above all there's good motivation, a good mix between younger riders and some experienced ones and that's how victories came that give morale to the whole team."
