Mads Pedersen has resumed training and is looking optimistically toward the Classics season where he wants to be a protagonist. The Danish rider was forced to stop due to a crash during the first stage of the Comunitat Valenciana on February 4th, where he suffered multiple injuries that required an extended period of rest. Third-place finisher at Paris-Roubaix last year, Mads Pedersen hopes to compete in the Classics and, looking at the calendar, his return should come on March 21st with Milan-San Remo followed by the E3 Saxo Classic on March 27th.
In his crash, Pedersen suffered fractures to his left wrist and collarbone and, although still in pain, is already training in Mallorca, Spain - accompanied by his father, brother, a doctor, a mechanic, and a chef - to be ready for the upcoming events.
«You all know that I'm still chasing one of those Monument Classics - Mads Pedersen had said in an interview last December - and I hope to achieve this goal of mine». His crash at the Comunitat Valenciana on February 4th has added another obstacle to his quest, but the thirty-year-old Danish rider hasn't lost hope and the Lidl-Trek rider provided an update through his team's podcast (In the Middle of Lidl-Trek).
«We were afraid that my back had taken a hard hit during the crash, but in the end it was just the wrist and collarbone, fortunately».
The situation is under control and the former world champion had a plate inserted in his shoulder. Pedersen described the pain of the first days of recovery: «It felt like my bones were burning. The wrist surgery also went well. But if I return to racing too soon, the bones might not heal properly. The hardest part of this period? Honestly, it was cleaning myself after using the bathroom».
Before returning to road training, Pedersen dedicated hours of preparation on the trainer. The three-time winner of Gent-Wevelgem (2020, 2024, and 2025) says he recently completed an important twenty-hour training block on the trainer and three hours on the road. «I miss racing - the Danish rider admitted sadly - I wonder how my body will react when I return to racing in a Classic. But if I didn't believe in it, I wouldn't push myself to the limit on the trainer like I'm doing. We believe in it; we've already seen riders who didn't need many races to be ready. There are many roads to take, this year we've just chosen a different one».
Pedersen is eager to return, but he knows that in these situations, rushing is the worst advisor. The Danish rider could try to return to racing in Italy at Milan-San Remo on March 21st, but he also knows that three weeks of preparation is little to face a demanding Classic like the Spring Classic.
