Demi Vollering has been absent from the Giro Women since 2021, five years in which everything has truly changed. In that edition, the Dutch athlete was 25 years old and was already the designated heir to Anna Van Der Breggen, who had won that race for the fourth and final time in her career. For Vollering, who finished in third place, it was her first podium in a Grand Tour, from which point she would go on to become the world's best stage race athlete. This year "Deminator" returns to the Giro Women to win it and to complete her trifecta of Grand Tours.
Demi Vollering's 2026 season began on February 12th at the Setmana Ciclista Volta Femenina de la Comunitad Valenciana and in just three days of racing she has already managed to take home two stage victories, the points jersey, and the general classification. The European champion, who recently trained on the roads of the Giro di Lombardia, announced her upcoming race schedule through a social media post. This Saturday she will start the Omloop Nieuwsblad and the following week she will race the Strade Bianche; then she will take a month-long break before returning to the northern classics with the Dwars door Vlaanderen, Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Then come the stage races with the Giro d'Italia, Tour de Suisse, and Tour de France, before finally competing at the World Championships in September.
"I am truly happy to return to racing at the Giro Women," Demi wrote beneath the post. Her participation in the Giro is certainly the big surprise of her seasonal program and reflects the date change of the Giro Rosa. If until last year the proximity to the Tour de France had pushed the Dutch athlete to decline, the positioning of the RCS race between May and June has now caught her attention. Demi Vollering will have to face off against her former teammate and directrice sportive Anna Van Der Breggen and Elisa Longo Borghini, winner of the last two editions. If the men's Giro has been accused multiple times of not having enough champions, the women's race is ready to give us a battle of the highest level.
