A season start that leaves one breathless. Remco Evenepoel in the new Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe jersey has seemed unbeatable and his teammates have been a harmonious team, as demonstrated by the team time trial dominated in Mallorca at almost 60 kilometers per hour average. After three victories in three days of the Challenge Mallorca, the Flemish rider returns to racing on Wednesday at the Vuelta Valenciana.
"I always have to win, but obviously it's not just about the season; winning or not winning is not the only factor" - explains Evenepoel, 26 years old - "I had a good feeling in advance, and we decided to race in Mallorca because we knew I would have a chance on that course, and it proved to be a good choice. Now we are on the mainland and I have the same ambition: to make the most of my condition and try to win".
The Vuelta Valenciana presents five stages from today to Sunday, without a mountain finish: the classification will be decided on Thursday in the Alginet time trial, 17 km with a small climb of 3 km at an average of 3.6%, and on Saturday in Teulada Moraira, a tough stage with final gradients over 10%. The concluding day on Sunday in Valencia (just 95 km) is also interesting, with 11% sections in the middle of the stage: "I will take the first step towards the classification with the time trial - continues Evenepoel - and then I will try to seize another opportunity somewhere else. Saturday is a really tough stage in the area where I always train".
Remco will have very strong teammates around him, starting with Giulio Pellizzari and Russian Aleksander Vlasov, both making their seasonal debut: "That mountain stage will test the team's behavior on the climb. It will definitely be a good test for us".
