Simultaneously, at the Sala Gonfalone of the Pistoia Municipality with tourism councilor Alessandro Sabella, Pistoia Provincial Cycling Committee President Alessandro Becherucci, Mariangela Niccolai from Uiset, and at the Music Room of the Zeffirelli Museum in Florence with sports councilor Letizia Perini, Uiset (Italian Sports and Tourism Union) President Sandro Tacconi, Michela Piccioni, Regional Cycling Committee President Luca Menichetti, Riccardo Nencini (Gabinetto Viesseux), and Marco Ricciarini from the University of Florence, the historic Florence-Pistoia cycling event scheduled for Sunday, February first, was presented.
On this occasion, two exhibitions were opened. At the Zeffirelli Museum, an exhibition titled "Florence-Pistoia 1870 during the Florence Capital Period" featuring historic bicycles, tables, and drawings of Florence as it was, will remain open until February 8th. In Pistoia, at the "Salt Warehouses", the exhibition "The City of Pistoia during the Florence Capital Period".
The historical reenactment of the Florence-Pistoia, the first cycling race held in Italy in February 1870, is rich with side events. Yesterday, a conference-meeting with middle schools in Poggio a Caiano, on Saturday, January 31st, an ecological bike ride in Florence starting at 2 PM from Cascine Park, followed by a meeting with authorities, historians, and journalists to discuss the history and sports of the Florence capital period.
In Pistoia, another meeting with schools will be held in the morning, while in the afternoon (at 3 PM) there will be a bike ride through the historic center followed by a conference.
The highlight of the Florence-Pistoia event, organized by O.Ci.P. and Uiset, is next Sunday. At 9 AM, departure from Cascine Park in Florence, preceded by 19 cyclists in period clothing and historic bikes, escorted by enthusiasts including the two sons of the late Franco Ballerini, Matteo and Gianmarco, and other cycling personalities like Olympic athletes Giovannetti and Poli, Di Basco, Giordani, Casagrande, Giraldi, Arzilli, Naldi, Anzà, Baronti, Santerini, Cafissi, Popovich. At 10:30 AM, a stop at Poggio a Caiano's Medici Stables to receive special recognitions, and at noon, arrival in Duomo Square in Pistoia after 33 kilometers. A symbolic and popular event, described as a true popular celebration, uniting sport, historical memory, and territorial enhancement.
