The Prato section of the cycling path connecting Prato to Florence, 12 kilometers long, will be a place of memory in remembrance of Giovanni Iannelli. Vice-prefectural commissioner Lo Castro, representing the Municipality of Prato, inaugurated the path in the presence of numerous civil and sports authorities, officially dedicating it to Giovanni Iannelli, the young Prato cyclist who tragically lost his life in Piedmont six years ago due to injuries sustained during the final sprint.
The plaque includes his name and the inscription "Blue of Cycling". The ceremony was filled with emotion. Family, friends, teammates, and citizens came together in a collective embrace, while dozens of orange balloons flew into the air. In that composed grief, the words during the ceremony of Giovanni's father, Carlo Iannelli, who continues to tirelessly fight for a fair trial and for a theme that concerns every athlete and every citizen: road safety. The dedication of the cycling path certainly does not erase the pain, but traveling along this path will provide a tangible memory of Giovanni, his smile, his passion, and his blue Italian National jersey proudly worn on the pavé of Paris-Roubaix when he raced as a junior. Passing through that area of Prato near the entrance to the Florence-Mare highway, it will be an invitation to responsibility, a reminder to protect those who live on the road with love for sport and life. On Saturday, December 6th, the city of Prato did not just inaugurate a cycling path, but celebrated a son, a friend, an athlete who must never be forgotten.
